We married during the finale, in a screaming church
of nonbelievers bargaining for salvation
I saw how the gods looked on,
brandishing thunderbolts and hyacinths, how
anticlimactic our hope was. We trampled
on the mountain below us
to pray for a mere possibility in rage
& when our shells returned in shards
to this amnesiac terra, I saw briefly, life,
the thousand crawling that could have
carried us on sundry vanishing honeymoons
